This paper will present an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the nature and causes of violence in South African society, and attempt to provide answers to questions relating to the prevalence of acquaintance violence and the high degree of violence involved in many criminal incidents. Among other things the paper aims to:

• Put forward a framework that is useful for understanding criminal violence in South Africa.
• Give an account of the current state of knowledge about the dominant forms of violence in South Africa.
• Contribute to debate and strengthening understanding about violence, and measures to address violence, in South Africa.
